Edmund Taylor Memorial

The inscription, now very faded, originally read:

In Memory of
EDMUND TAYLOR Esq.
of Castlemorton in this County
who died June 24th 1802
aged 68 years.

This wall memorial plaque of a marble tablet surrounded by carved stone, was brought from the old Church of St. James and installed in the new church.

Two days after Edmund Taylor died, he was buried in the graveyard of the old Church of St. James.  The Parish records spell his name Tayler, however, is not unusual to find phonetic spellings in such records, and the further back in time one goes, the more common phonetic spelling becomes.

From the inscription we can see that Edmund Taylor lived at Castlemorton immediately prior to his death, but as he was buried at the old Church of St. James and that was where his memorial was originally installed, we believe he originated from Welland and continued attending the old church here.  The Parishes of Castlemorton and Welland are adjacent to each other.

Research is ongoing to substantiate whether Edmund Taylor was was related to the Taylor family who owned and lived in Welland Court until the mid 1750s.  This remains a strong possibility as we know that there were at least two other Edmund Taylors who did belong to the Welland Court family, also there were not many families at that time important enough or wealthy enough to have such a substantial memorial designed and installed in the church.
